The Sweet And Sour of OHS
Could the School Schedule be Changed For The Better
April 22, 2022
At the moment we start school at 9:00 A.M. and end school at 4:15 P.M. Meaning we go to school for 7 hours and 15 minutes. Minus the 1 hour and 5 minute lunch time and the 3, 5 minute class switch times which is 15 minutes only adds up to 1 hour and 20 minutes of instructional time missed during a school day. North Carolina has the law of a school must either be in school for 185 days or 1025 hours. Currently we are in school for 177 days with the exceptions of snow days. But we are also over the 1025 hour minimum by 258.25 hours. I personally think that changing over to 180 days with 6 hours of instruction would be much more pleasing to everyone in the process. I also think that changing the time that school starts and ends. I think if school started closer to 7:30 A.M. and ended at 1:30 P.M. it would benefit everyone. You could have your 4 classes from the very start that go till about 1:00 and then if kids need to be fed then they could stay and eat school lunch, but if not a student could leave as there is no more learning that is going to be done for that day. Then everyone will have their afternoon to either do homework or go to work as many people in highschool have a job.
I think that changing the start time and end time would help everyone’s mental state at the end of the day. OCS says that start time at 9 is better for students but the truth is if you’re not going to bed at the right time to be ready for an early start in life where most jobs start in the morning.
The question that I asked was could the start and end time be changed for the better for school? Jed Tilley said “I feel like we should at least get out an hour earlier because half way through class we get the work done and just sit there till class is over.” Carl King said “Yes, shorter.”
