Cross Country: More Than Just Running

Elliott Alder

Cross country running is a long distance running sport. It was first recognized in Britain in 1838 although long distance running has been around since the hunter gatherers roamed the earth. Runners run anywhere from 2.5 miles to 7.5 miles (most commonly around 3 miles) over mostly grass and dirt terrain.

Cross country is a difficult sport not only physically, but mentally as well. It requires a lot of mental strength to run 3 miles or more with no breaks. This is why it is necessary to have a good attitude and support from fellow runners.

The Orange High School cross country team is an excellent group of students that work hard and help lift each other up in order to keep everyone feeling motivated and in shape. This is important for the highly enduring meets where the team races against other schools for the fastest time.

The way cross country is scored makes every team member important. Not just the fastest players are cardinal in winning. Cross country is scored by counting the top 5 players and their positions from every team. Similarly to golf, the team with the lowest score wins. This only fortifies the idea that cross country is a team sport and makes it more important to keep everybody on the team able to run.

The players aren’t the only important aspect of cross country, coaches, managers and school staff help keep the team working hard. For example, it is important to manage what we eat and when. Coaches help manage our eating habits and teachers work with runners to allow time to eat in class. School athletic staff also help in many aspects of the sports program.

In conclusion, cross country is a lot more than just running far. It requires a great deal of commitment and determination to achieve great things. It is a team sport where every runner participates and contributes to the whole group. Coaches help motivate and manage players and meets, while other school staff members cooperate with runners to ensure they are running to the best of their abilities.
