Social Media

Social Media can either be a negative or positive impact on people. Research shows that social media mostly affect people in a negative way. According to Pew Research Center, over 64% of Americans say social media has made a bad effect in their daily life.

Pie Chart

I went around and asked some students at Orange High school of how social media has impacted them; in a positive way or negative way. I made a pie chart to show the result.

As the chart shows, most students chose that social media has affected them in a negative way but why?

The Why

The question was; do you compare yourself a lot to the beauty standards in social media? “When I was 12 years old I didn’t know much about social media, now that I am 16 I wish I didn’t know about it at all. It has affected my self esteem in a negative way and just caused me to change the way I think of myself. I believe social media is toxic for our souls and mental state” says Melanie Maqueda Tlaczani,10.

“So I think social media can be really great so it can help you explore different things that you’re really into like topics and subjects. So I’m a dancer and I often use social media to look at other people’s dance videos. It can also be draining so a lot of people might have problems with it because they compare themselves to other people.” Says Taylor Faibish,12.

Ways to Avoid Social Media

There’s many ways to stay away from social media or your phone in general.“The best ways you can avoid social media are to try to be focused on activities that you enjoy. Try to turn off notifications so you won’t be obligated to look at your phone while you are doing something like homework.” says Samantha Garrad,10. There’s also apps you can use that will help you not stay on your phone as much, it is called Forest and there’s also Flora. The main purpose is to help you stay focused on the duties you need to do for a certain amount of time.
